When Things Go Wrong, My IQ Goes Up?

This past week I had downloaded a trial version of a popular CRM (Customer Relationship Management) computer program to try it out in conjunction with Microsoft Outlook.  Things went well until I uninstalled it -- then things went wrong (very wrong), and my computer had some serious problems.  (I won't mention the program, but the CRM company created a terrible uninstall procedure that wrecked havoc.  And this from a top-of-the-line company with a pretty good market share in the CRM arena).

While I consider myself to be computer savy, there remains PLENTY that I do not [yet] know about computers and their associated operating systems.  This problem had me stumped.

Computer system.jpgWhat followed was quite a few hours of research, experimentation, trial and error, and coffee cup refills.  Finally, after much learning and much practical "hands-on" work, the computer is back to being the speedy one that it was prior to things going wrong.

In addition, I also now have a greatly expanded knowledge base of some areas of the computer's operating system and some of the other programs that serve numerous other applications.  I now am comfortable with the previously nerve-wracking practice of editing the Windows Registry file with ease and accuracy.  (Note: do NOT attempt to edit the Windows Registry file without first gaining some excellent instruction.  This file is extremely critical to the computer's operating system, and can be quite temperamental if not treated in an exacting manner).

The other program I became much more familiar with was that of Microsoft SQL Server.  This module works with programs that need database functionality, and it too can be temperamental if not set-up right.  The uninstall program of the CRM package damaged the original SQL installation, so I had to uninstall the SQL and then find the right version to install fresh -- a particular version that works with some other programs that I have running.

All of this illustrates a point: when things in life go awry, it is a great opportunity to transition into the problem solving mode and begin to learn new things and try new things.  Because things went wrong on my computer, and because I determined to jump in, research, learn, experiment, and stay with it, I now know some more about computers and their operating system (in this case, Windows XP) and other programs that serve multiple programs (in this case, Windows SQL Server).

If things had NOT gone wrong, I never would have learned and experienced what I did because it DID go wrong.

Books.jpgLife is like that too.  Sometimes the greatest things in life that we can learn and experience are only encountered as we face things that have gone wrong, and then we follow through with research, experiments, seeking of advice, reading instruction manuals, etc.

Recently, what has gone wrong in your life or circumstances?  This is a great opportunity for your IQ to go up!

Thanks for reading.  Have a GREAT evening!
